About the SURGE internships program at IIT Kanpur
As part of the Students-Undergraduate Research Gduraate Excellence (SURGE) initiative, students from IITK and other partner universities do quick yet focused research projects that stretch their intellectual capabilities beyond the classroom.
The SURGE program is tentatively scheduled to run from 11 May 2023 to 13 July 2023 and is expected to last for 8 weeks.
After four weeks, the SURGE participants are required to submit a mid-term report to a review committee made up of academic staff members from IIT Kanpur. The review committee criticizes the work and suggests revisions that may be made.
Eligibility criteria for IIT students :
- B.Tech./BS (2nd,3rd year completed),
- Dual Degree (2nd, 3rd, 4th year),
- 2-Year M.Sc (1st year)
For non-IIt students:
- B.Tech/BE/B-Arch/BS (3rd year finished) (3rd year completed),
- Five-year degree program (3rd year completed, 4th year completed)
- B.Sc./B.A. (2nd year completed)
- 2-Year M.Sc (1st year completed)
For SARC students:
- B.Tech/BE/B-Arch/BS (3rd year completed),
- Five year degree program (3rd year completed, 4th year completed)
- B.Sc/B.A. (2nd year completed)
Administrative and Registration charges:
Information on this will be available beginning on January 19, 2023. Participants WHO ARE NOT ASSOCIATED WITH IITK are required to pay a registration fee of Rs. 500 ($5) through the State Bank Collect Payment Gateway. (tentatively).
Participants who are selected for SURGE-2023 must pay the administrative fees, which are Rs. 2500 for IITK participants and Rs. 3500 for non-IITK participants. SURGE’s administrative costs are nonrefundable.

About the IIt Certificates
Participants in SURGE who do very high-caliber research throughout the project are recognized with an award and a certificate of appreciation. After four weeks, the SURGE participants are required to submit a mid-term report to a review committee made up of academic staff members from IIT Kanpur. The evaluation committee criticizes the project work of the participants and gives ideas for improvements.
Following the program’s end, each SURGE participant displays a poster demonstrating the project work they completed at IITK. The poster presentation, which is assessed by IIT Kanpur academics, is open to the public.

Important note about the SURGE internship program
- For IITK participants, a letter of recommendation (LOR) is optional; nevertheless, the names of two possible references (IITK Faculty) must be listed on the application form and may be confirmed as needed.
- IITK participants are not allowed to participate in the SURGE-2023 PROJECT and SUMMER COURSE at the same time. With one exception, individuals whose CPI is >=8.5 may pursue one SUMMER COURSE in addition to the SURGE-2023 PROJECT.
- The online registration may start on January 19, 2023.
- The online registration may close from February 15, 2023.
